Changing a Bathroom Waste Plug

There are times when we just need a new bathroom sink waste plug. Whether you’re changing an old waste plug for a new one, or maybe you are opting to change the colour of your basin accessories from say chrome to black. Alternatively you may be fitting a newly installed bathroom basin and that will include the fitting of the new waste plug too. Whatever your reason, here’s a short guide to help you choose the correct waste and how to fit it.

The Waste Plug

If you are not sure which waste plug you need for your bathroom basin, then please read our How to Guide Which Waste Plug To Choose?

These are the four main types of waste and to fit each one is really the same process:

Which Waste to choose

Each waste will have a

  1. Top Seal
  2. Bottom Larger Seal
  3. Black Fixing Nut

  1. Take the larger seal and fixing nut off the threaded shaft, so only the thinner seal remains on the waste.
  2. Make sure the thinner top seal is cupped upwards on the waste and place it in the basin hole. Note: On the slotted waste, there are two holes and these have to line up with the internal overflow holes in the basin and must not be blocked.
  3. Once the waste is in place in the basin (and through the countertop if there), the second washer is then fitted to the waste, underneath the cabinet and cupped upwards.
  4. The Black fixing nut is then hand tightened to secure the waste to the basin. Do not overtighten the fixing nut.  If required, a bottletrap is then fitted to the waste .
