The correct cleaning sequence

Whether you’re about to clean a large family bathroom or a small downstairs cloakroom, it’s important to know where to start. Luckily, there is a clear answer.

Start your bathroom washing by removing all toiletries, towels and everything else that might be in the way. You need a clean slate to get going.

Now that you’ve done that, go through these next points in the following order.

How to clean a bathroom

How to clean a bathroom extractor fan

Your extractor fan helps keep your bathroom fresh and free of mould. However, even the best models on the market will suffer from dirt and grime build-up over time.

Step one: switch off the power.

Step two: remove the cover and soak it in soapy water for a few minutes. Clear the dust from the inside unit with a feather duster and scrub it.

Step three: Once everything is dry, return the cover.

How to clean bathroom tiles

Spray all-purpose bathroom cleaner over the bathroom tiles. Let it sit for a couple of minutes before wiping it off with a microfibre cloth. You can use regular cloth, of course, but a microfiber option will access all cracks and crevasses much more efficiently.

The grout, the white stuff between the tiles, can turn grey or even black with dirt over time. To bring it back to pristine condition, mix bicarbonate of soda and bleach to create a thick paste. Apply it to the grout, allow it to sit for up to 30 minutes, and wipe it off.

Your bathtub is the ultimate place of comfort and relaxation where you can escape the world’s troubles. Unfortunately, it’s also prime real estate for all sorts of germs, grime and bacteria. However, there’s no need to worry! Here are some things you can do:

As your shower comes into contact with hard water, limescale build-up will inevitably follow. To remove it and descale, remove the shower head and soak it in white vinegar. After about 10 minutes, rinse thoroughly. That’s the best way to clean a shower.

If the shower head doesn’t come off, fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, put the shower head in and tie it with a string before rinsing.

You can use diluted white vinegar or a solution of lemon juice and water to make your shower door sparkling clean. Check out our guide on how to clean a shower door to learn the process.

While none of us likes to clean the toilet in a dirty bathroom, leaving it unattended for a long time is way worse, as you might have to replace it altogether.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do regularly that will make your life a lot easier:

  • Apply toilet bowl cleaner daily. Allow it to stay for a few minutes, then clean vigorously with a toilet brush.
  • Disinfect your toilet brush regularly with a mixture of bleach and hot water.
  • Clean the toilet seat and cover with wet wipes twice a week.
  • Once a month, drop a denture tablet in, wait for about 10 minutes and flush to remove dust and stains.

How to clean a bathroom floor

Pay special attention to the areas around the toilet and the basin pedestal (if you have one), as this is where dust and dirt are most likely to accumulate.

Once you’ve done all of the above, you’re all set to enjoy your clean bathroom!
